Obesity is a reality in the present world and a significant section of the population has succumbed to its adverse effects. Weight loss is the only means of countering obesity and there are innumerable weight loss programs available at one’s disposal and one can easily choose from the various weight loss diets and other supplements according to one’s convenience in order to ensure weight loss. The efficient means of communication like the media has immensely aided in promoting all forms of warnings and awareness in order to prevent obesity as it has been observed that with the passage of time a growing number of children are also falling victim to it. While this has benefited the people immensely there is also a flip side to this. With innumerable different viewpoints being published in the media there are certain diet myths which have been repeated over and over again and this has led many people to believe in these myths. However in reality these are actually myths which actually have no scientific groundings. Some of the common diet myths that one can come across are discussed here.

It is a popular misconception among many that carbohydrates promote weight gain within the body and this is a pure myth which has been formulated by those who vouch for high-protein diets to ensure weight loss. It is necessary to point out here that there are both good and bad carbohydrates and the good carbohydrates are extremely useful for the body and should be consumed in certain proportions. A very well-known concept that has influenced many is that if one skips meals, one will be able to ensure greater weight loss. This is a leading reason that has contributed to anorexia and bulimia among teenagers all over the world and can lead to death. Thus it must be clarified here that skipping meals can actually increase weight as it will increase the hunger cravings immensely. It is also to be noted that all fat-free foods which are marketed at present need not be necessarily calorie free and therefore there is no reason to believe that they will facilitate weight loss. It is also important to state here that fat is not harmful for the body and certain amounts of fat are necessary for the functioning of the body. Another misconception is that dairy foods can contribute to gaining weight. On the other hand, it should be pointed out that a diet comprising of dairy products can ensure effective and permanent weight loss for a long duration.
